The 20k Project is an off-campus design-build program at Auburn University organized by Rural Studio . The program gives architecture students the opportunity to receive a more hands-on educational experience building affordable homes, assisting the poverty level population in West Alabama's Black Belt region. The students have found a way to make these at $14,000 and the balance is paid to the construction workers for building it. The black siding makes all the difference too.
Possessing a humorous eye for everyday awkwardness and a facility with paint, Chantal Joffe brings a combination of insight and integrity to the genre of figurative art. She has a deceptively casual brushstroke. Her images combine fluidity with a pragmatic approach to representation. Almost always depicting women or girls, sometimes in groups but recently in iconic portraits, the paintings adhere to their photographic source, but with the distortions of the brush or pencil that can often make a subject seem more real.
San Francisco landscape designer Flora Grubb has made a national name for herself, taking an alternative approach to the indoor and outdoor gardening -”she favors non-flowering succulents and hardy, hard-to-kill plants in her quirky creations. Get a sense of her style at her eponymous San Francisco shop, located in Bayview, where she sells French garden furniture, gardening books, accessories, and offers on-site espresso courtesy of Ritual Coffee.

Great interview with Linda Rodin.
Her best quote: I think one does feel more liberated and independent when one gets older. More honest and open with yourself and others. But you still have insecurities—they're different, but they don't totally go away.
More good advice:
‘Forget about the wrinkles and focus on the silhouette.’
Love this rustic look but especially like the look out through the open door. Such a comfortable space with all the elements - inviting seating, reused found objects, framed art, plants and a great painted floor. But it really is the view of the garden, you would never want to shut the door.
Everyone is talking about Marfa Texas. 3 hours from the El Paso airport, it has become the art quest journey for creative types. Here is a round up of what to do:
WHERE TO PLAY:Now, Marfa is known for its quirky haunts. Think: A grilled cheese shack, which is only open after 9:30 p.m. on the weekends, a shop where you can order handmade cowboy boots, and a restaurant in a woman's home where burritos are the only item on the menu.
WHAT TO SEE:Marfa garnered a reputation for modular, minimalist design in the 1970s, after sculptor Donald Judd decamped from New York to the desert town. Judd's own work, which consists of 100 untitled geometric sculptures in mill aluminum, is best viewed at the Chinati Foundation. His attention to linear forms has indubitably permeated into the town's architecture, which combine sleek, minimalist design with the adobe-style homes typical of Texas' agricultural landscape.
WHERE TO STAY:When James Dean, Rock Hudson, and Elizabeth Taylor filmed Giant in 1956, they stayed at the Hotel Paisano. It's since been completely renovated – with WiFi and a pool – and named a historic landmark.
The historic Hotel Saint George, too, has been renovated – this time, to hyper-modern effect, featuring angular, industrial interiors and a farmer's market on Saturdays. The Marfa Book Company - a space that's equally parts bookstore, performance space, and concept store – can be found in the hotel's lobby.

1 quart strawberries
1/2 cup of sugar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
In a food processor, process strawberries until coarsely chopped. Transfer to a largeskillet and stir in sugar and lemon juice. Cook over medium-high, stirring frequently, until jam is thickened and bubbles completely cover surface, 9 to 10 minutes. Transfer jam to a jar and let cool to room temperature. (To store, seal jar and refrigerate, up to 10 days).
